Detailed Itinerary of 8 Days Big Game and Primates Safari
Day 1: Kigali city
On arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda’s capital Kigali City, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and journey to Akagera National Park. Depending on your arrival time, you will enjoy a short Kigali City Tour visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, then continue to Akagera arriving in the late afternoon, check in at your lodge and spend the rest of day at relaxation.
Overnight at Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Day 2: Akagera National Park
Rise early for breakfast and head to the only game park in Rwanda – Akagera National Park for a game viewing experience. The park is home to all the African Big Five and other wildlife species which you will see during the full day game drive as you explore the savannah landscape in a 4×4 safari vehicle.
Some of the animals to lookout for including lions, elephants, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos, giraffes, gazelles, zebras and several bird species. Enjoy picnic lunch and continue exploring the park and a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. At sunset, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Akagera – Kigali
Wake up early for a cup of coffee and head to the park for an early morning gme drive, a perfect time to see predators like leopards, hyenas, elusive bird species such as shoebill stork and the swamp – dwelling Sitatunga. After lunch, you will check out and transfer to Kigali City.

Game drive in Akagera National Park
Day 4: Kigali – Nyungwe Forest National Park
After breakfast, transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park with a stopover in Butare. Arrive in the evening, check in at your lodge for an afternoon of rest.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is the most preserved forest in Africa and is acclaimed as the most important site for biodiversity in Rwanda, the park is a primate haven, home to a huge population of chimpanzees and other 12 primate species including black and white colobus monkeys and olive baboons among others.

Day 5: Nyungwe Forest National Park
Enjoy an early breakfast and head to the park headquarters for briefing about chimpanzee trekking, a senior ranger guide will take you through rules and regulations to follow while in the forest. Led by an armed ranger guide, enter into the forest searching for chimpanzees. The trek takes approximately 2 to 4 hours or more depending on the movement of the chimpanzees and where they spent their previous night. Spend an hour in their presence as you watch them play, feed and groom each other..
Return to the park headquarters, meet your guide and transfer to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you will go for a canopy walk on a high suspended metallic bridge above the Nyungwe Forest. During the walk you will be treated to views of the Nyungwe Forest Canopy, birds and primates playing on tree branches. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Nyungwe – Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, you will transfer to Volcanoes National Park – home to mountain gorillas and the best place to see them. Along the way you will enjoy en-route lunch, arrive in the park in the afternoon, check in and spend the rest of the day at rest as you prepare for gorilla trekking adventure the next day.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking Experience
Wake up early for breakfast, and head to the park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing from a senior ranger guide. In groups of 8 people he will assigned you a gorilla family to trek, head into the forest searching for mountain gorillas. The trek takes approximately 2 to 4 hours or more depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they spent their previous night.
Spend one hour with their presence as you watch them play, feed and groom each other. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and short rest. Later go for a visit to the Ib’Iwacu Cultural Village where you will meet the former gorilla poachers and witness how they have transformed their lives to protecting the gorillas. You will be entertained by local dances and drama, take part in crowning the king and visiting the local herbalists. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8: Golden Monkey Trekking – Kigali city
Wake up early for breakfast, return to the park headquarters for briefing about golden monkey trekking, then head into the forest looking for the endemic golden monkeys, the trek takes approximately 2 to 3 hour hours. You will watch these beautiful primate play, feed and groom each other, watch them jump from one tree to another.
Return to the lodge for lunch and transfer back to Kigali for your return flight.
