Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo, Gorilla trekking is the most thrilling wildlife adventure that involves hiking through the dense rainforest with an aim of encountering the majestic mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, found in the southwestern parts of Uganda, is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. The park is also well known for being the most biodiverse rainforest on the earth and it’s divided into four major sectors that is Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. Nkuringo is situated in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest. It’s also often referred to as the most scenic and rewarding sector for gorilla trekking. Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo

Gorilla trekking is the top activity done in Nkuringo, and it involves hiking through thick lush rainforest to see the habituated gorilla families. The sector is home to a number of gorilla families that is Nkuringo, Bushaho, and Christmas gorilla families, each with its own unique Character. The Nkuringo family is among the oldest habituated gorilla families and it’s also famous for its big size. This family is usually found in high altitude areas and due to this it offers trekkers a rigorous but rewarding climbing experience. Bushaho family is new and often gives visitors a fresh excellent chance to observe their interactions and natural behaviour.  Christmas family was named after its dominant silverback Christmas although it’s small, it offers an equally captivating experience.

Despite its remoteness, Nkuringo offers a more exclusive gorilla trekking experience since it’s less crowded. Visitors tend to feel a closer connection with the gorillas and nature, without any distractions or overcrowded trails.

Gorilla Trekking Experience in Nkuringo

You will wake up very early in the morning and head to the park headquarters where you will receive briefing on how to conduct yourself around the gorillas. When briefing is done, you will be divided into groups of eight people where each group will have a guide and armed ranger to start your trek. The trek can last from 2 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. As you navigate the rugged landscape, you’ll be treated to incredible views of the forest, volcanoes, and encounters with other wildlife like monkeys and forest birds. Once you find the mountain gorillas, you will be allowed to spend one hour with them. During this time, you will have a chance to take photos of the gorillas eating, breastfeeding and grooming each other. After the trek you will head back to the park headquarters where you will be given a certificate.

Nature Walks

Nkuringo offers the best and amazing nature walks that take about 4–5-hours giving visitors a chance to explore the thick impenetrable forest of Bwindi. The nature walk can be done either in the morning or evening. The walks are conducted along Kashasha River Trail, which connects Nkuringo to Buhoma.  During this nature walk you will see beautiful breath-taking landscapes, rivers, dense forest, butterflies, birds, primates, and indigenous flora along the way. The Batwa, also referred to as the pygmies were the indigenous forest dwellers of   Bwindi before it became a national park in 1991. During your visit you will be taken through the Batwa’s traditional way of life like how they hunted, gathered wild food, made fire, and treated illnesses using forest herbs. This is done through music, dance, and storytelling that reflect the Batwa’s deep connection to the forest.  The Batwa Cultural Experience helps to promote cultural understanding and supports the local Batwa communities.

Bird Watching

Nkuringo is often referred to as haven for bird watchers, as it’s home to over 350 bird species among which are the Albertine Rift endemics.  This birding activity is carried out with the help of a knowledgeable birding guide who will ensure that you spot both rare and common bird species along trails like the Kashasha River Trail, and forest edge. Best Time to Visit Nkuringo

The best time to visit Nkuringo for all the activities mentioned above is during the dry season that is in the months of June to August and December to February. since during this time of the year, the trails are less slippery, and visibility is better.

How to Get to Nkuringo

By Road via Uganda

Nkuringo is about 10–11 hours from Kampala by road via Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale. From Kabale, it’s another 2–3-hour scenic drive through the hilly countryside and terraced farms of Kabale.

By Road via Rwanda

Visitors can also drive to Nkuringo from Kigali. This drive from Kigali to Nkuringo via the Cyanika or Katuna border post takes about 4–5 hours, making it the best option for those who prefer shorter road journeys.

By Air

You can fly to Kisoro Airstrip from Kajjansi Airfield with Aero Link Uganda or Bar Aviation. When you land in Kisoro you will have a 2-hour drive to Nkuringo.
