The Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

The gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park always starts in the morning with the arrival of tourists at the park headquarters. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park features four gorilla trekking sectors – Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Buhoma. Each of these sectors is home to numerous habituated gorilla families for trekking and a head office, where trekking experiences begin. Here, the tourists are registered by their respective tour guides or representatives from their tour companies. If the tourists are self-driving, a representative from the group can go and register the group.

While registering at the park headquarters, tourists are required to present valid gorilla trekking permits and valid photocopies of their passports or personal identification. Following registration, tourists are taken through a brief series of entertainment from the local Batwa and Bakiga entertainment groups, who always entertain visitors before their gorilla trek.

By 8 am, visitors in Bwindi are then taken through a general briefing about gorilla trekking, which is carried out by one of the UWA rangers. After the briefing, the lead guide will then distribute visitors into respective groups of eight and allocate each group a particular gorilla family to trek.

The Age of Tourists

If the clients appear too old, for instance, 55 years and above, they are assigned gorilla groups that are closer and require shorter treks.

Physical Fitness and Health of the Tourists

For tourists who have some physical or health complications, there is a provision for communicating before, at the reception desk. This can be considered, and the tourists will be assigned a shorter gorilla trek, despite age.

There are also scenarios where some tourists may require a medium gorilla trek lasting between 1 and 2 hours to the gorillas, plus another hour for review. However, there are also longer gorilla treks (lasting up to 6 hours), especially for the young and adventurous tourists who wish to explore the forest in depth. All these factors are put into consideration during the allocation of gorilla groups for gorilla trekking.

Visitors are requested to present any concerns, interests, and preferences that they might have in regards to the gorilla trekking experience. For instance, the choice of trek, whether a short or long trek. All these issues are presented by the tourists’ driver guides or tour operators to avoid any errors that might arise during the gorilla trekking experience.

Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

For a successful gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, tourists are advised to come prepared with a range of things, among which include;

Good hiking shoes: Being a tropical rainforest, the weather in Bwindi is unpredictable, which makes rain frequent. This makes the trails muddy and slippery, which makes navigation difficult. Good sturdy hiking will help you have a firm grip on the ground.

A rain jacket: Having discussed that Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, the weather is always changing with frequent rains that last several hours. You will need a rainproof jacket to avoid being drenched in the rain.

Plenty of drinking water: Tourists are required to pack plenty of drinking water (a minimum of 1.5 litres) per person to avoid cases of dehydration during the long treks to see the mountain gorillas.

Packed lunch: Having indicated how gorilla groups are allocated for trekking, the time taken to reach the gorillas is unpredictable, depending on their location in the forest. Tourists are advised to carry a packed lunch in case there is a need to have a forest lunch.

Face masks: Tourists are prohibited from trekking with mountain gorillas without face masks. This is a result of our genetic relationship with these Great Apes, which is over 98%, which therefore makes it easy for these animals to contract diseases from humans and vice versa.

Garden gloves: The forest is thick with vines, branches, and thorny plants. Garden gloves will protect your hands when grabbing onto trees or bushes for support during the trek.

Long-sleeved shirts and trousers: To avoid scratches, insect bites, and stinging nettles, it’s best to wear long-sleeved shirts and full-length trousers. Light but strong fabric is ideal for both comfort and protection.

Gaiters or long socks: Tuck your trousers into your socks or use gaiters to keep ants and other crawling insects from getting into your clothes. It also helps protect your lower legs from mud and thorns.

Insect repellent: Bwindi is home to many insects, including mosquitoes. A strong insect repellent helps prevent bites and keeps you more comfortable during the trek.

A walking stick: Usually provided at the start of the trek, but you can also carry your own. A walking stick provides extra balance and support, especially on steep or slippery slopes.

A camera (without flash): You will need a good camera to capture the unforgettable moment when you meet the gorillas. Flash photography is not allowed, so make sure your camera is set to function well in low light.

A small backpack: To carry all your essentials, such as water, a packed lunch, a camera, and more, a small, comfortable backpack is a must.

Porters: During gorilla trekking, there are porters available to help you carry your backpack, cameras, and any other luggage that you might have. Porters will also help you cross and navigate through the muddy and rough terrain in Bwindi. Tourists are advised to hire local porters from the adjacent local communities, which is also a way of giving back to the gorilla community. The minimum cost of hiring a local porter is $20, and the maximum cost always depends on how well you appreciate the services offered.

Sedan chairs: For the senior and disabled tourists who may be worried about how to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi, worry not! The management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced what is referred to as “the African helicopter,” a comfortable seat-like stretcher with a seatbelt, that is carried by about 12 porters. The porters will carry you and help you trek through the forest to see the mountain gorillas. The minimum cost for a sedan chair in Bwindi is $300 per person.
