Rwanda is home to over 13 primate species that travelers can realistically spot on safari. This country packs more primate diversity into its 26,338 square kilometres than almost anywhere else on Earth. Among the country’s prominent primates are the gentle yet highly endangered mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and the beautiful golden monkeys. Being able to watch these primates up close in their natural habitat is a wildlife experience that cannot be compared to any other.

Rwanda’s Leading Primates

Rwanda’s headline primate is the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), found only in Volcanoes National Park within Rwanda’s borders. Its close second is the golden monkey, an endangered species endemic to only the Virunga Conservation Area. Nyungwe National Park in the southwest of Rwanda is a stronghold for the chimpanzees and it stands as the most primate diverse forest in Rwanda, hosting the common chimpanzee alongside other lesser primates such as the Ruwenzori colobus, L’Hoest monkey, red-tailed monkey, vervet monkey, olive baboon, and grey cheeked mangabey and olive baboons.

Mountain Gorillas: Rwanda’s Crown Jewel Primate

A mountain gorilla encounter in Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park is one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters. Volcanoes national park is home to over one thirds of the total population of mountain gorillas in the world inhabiting the park’s lush, mist-covered vegetation.

Mountain gorillas are the largest living primates in existence today and are characterized with a muscular and robust build. These primates can be identified by their enormous black fur covered bodies, broad chest, and an impressive sagittal crest on their forehead. The adult males are endowed with a silvery hair across their backs thus the name silverback.

Often, the silverbacks are the dominant males in the gorilla family and hold the responsibility of guiding, protecting, and maintaining peace within their respective gorilla families.

Today, Volcanoes national park issues up to 40 gorilla trekking permits per day to the different gorilla groups in this national park. Each group of 8 visitors are assigned to one gorilla family for the day and they are allowed a maximum of 1 hour in the presence of these gentle giants.

In order to visit the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park, a visitor must obtain a mountain gorilla trekking permit. These gorilla permits can either be obtained directly from the Rwanda Development Board or through a licensed, trusted tour operator. These permits not only allow you to spend an incredible 1 hour with the mountain gorillas but also contribute to their conservation and support livelihood of the local communities.

The hike to find the mountain gorillas can be quite physically demanding, but with proper physical preparation and correct packing, the experience can be made more comfortable and enjoyable.

While planning a gorilla trekking safari, we recommend booking your gorilla permits at least 3 to 4 months in advance especially when planning this safari for the peak season which runs from June to September and December to February.

Chimpanzee

Located in southwestern Rwanda along the borders with Burundi and DR Congo, Nyungwe was gazetted as a national park in 2004 and protects roughly 970 km² of rainforest, bamboo, swamp, and grassland a landscape that straddles the watershed between the Congo and Nile river basins. This pristine rainforest is home to over 500 chimpanzees, one of Africa’s famous great apes thriving in its thick canopies.

Chimpanzees are a highly active, intelligent and social species and share a 98% DNA with humans. Nyungwe forest national park offers guided chimpanzee trekking experiences that start with a briefing at the Uwinka visitor’s centre and allows you one hour to observe these distinct primates going about their daily way of life such as grooming, hunting, and playful interactions.

During chimpanzee trekking experience, a knowledgeable park ranger will lead you through the trails in the dense rainforest where you will hear the distant sounds of the chimpanzees before finally coming face to face with them.

Golden Monkeys: Rwanda’s Most Underrated Primate Encounter

Famous for their striking golden fur, golden monkeys are a distinct species endemic to the Albertine Rift and can be spotted in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkeys are one of the top three primates of Rwanda and these playful species can be spotted in Volcanoes national park, leaping from tree to tree and feeding on potatoes in the nearby gardens.

Just like gorilla trekking, a permit is required for the golden monkey trekking experience. The golden monkey trekking permit cost USD 100 per person and these can be obtained either directly from Rwanda Development Board or through a licensed, trusted tour operator.

Other lesser Primates of Rwanda

Despite being celebrated for the stunning mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and golden monkeys, Rwanda also boosts of other amazing primate species that survive in its different national parks most of which are situated in the bio-diverse Nyungwe forest national park which is estimated to be home to over 13 primate species. These primates include;

Ruwenzori black and white colobus monkeys

The black and white colobus monkeys are the second most celebrated primates in Nyungwe forest national park after the chimpanzees. These striking black and white leaf eaters are instantly recognizable by their snow-white whiskers, shoulder mantle, and tail tip.

These monkeys can be spotted leaping from one tree to another in troops of between 300-400 animals in the different enchanting forests in Rwanda including Nyungwe forest national park, Akagera national park and Gishwati-Mukura national park.

L’Hoest monkey

Also known as the mountain monkey, the L’Hoest monkey is a dark fur colored monkey characterized by a distinctive white beard and grizzled back. Just like the black and white colobus monkeys, the L’Hoest monkeys also live in large troops and can be spotted in trees as they leap from one branch to another or simply walking on the ground in the different protected areas in Rwanda especially Nyungwe forest national park and Gishwati Forest national park.

Red-tailed monkey

Easily identifiable by their coppery tail and white nose spot, the red-tailed monkeys are a small, agile, playful species of monkeys frequently spotted near water bodies. These monkeys mainly feed on aquatic plants and insects thus their habitats. The red-tailed monkeys are commonly spotted in Nyungwe forest national park.

Dent’s Mona monkeys

The Dent’s Mona monkeys are medium-sized primates found in the tropical rainforests and woodlands of Rwanda. These primates are characterized by the dark brown or black fur, white or yellowish forehead and cheek bands, and a long, slender body with a tail longer than its body. The dent’s mona monkeys possess a striking appearance, exhibit the agile behaviour and live in troops led by a dominant male.

The Dent’s mona monkeys consume a diet that comprises seeds, leaves, flowers, fruits, and insects.  In Rwanda, these monkeys can be spotted in Nyungwe forest national park.

Vervet monkey

Vervet monkeys are one of the most commonly spotted monkey species on a visit to any of the four national parks in Rwanda due to their adaptability. They inhabit areas such as woodlands, grasslands, forest, and urban areas and can often be spotted near forest edges and campsites. These monkeys are easily identifiable by their distinctive black faces and grizzled coats.

Grey-cheeked mangabey

Characterized by distinctive grey cheeks and a bushy white tuft at the base of its tail. The grey-cheeked mangabeys are large vocal canopy dwellers known for their deep, resonant calls that carry through the forest.

Just like a several other primate species, the grey cheeked mangabey possesses an arboreal lifestyle and are often spotted in Nyungwe forest national park carefully swinging through the tree canopies.

Olive baboon

Recognisable by their distinctive greyish-green fur, the Olive baboons are Rwanda’s largest species and can be spotted across Akagera national park and Nyungwe forest national park. The Olive baboons are a very social species and can be identified from their sharp barks to grunts, and are common in Rwanda’s woodlands though have the ability to survive both in open savanna grasslands and dense forests.

Blue monkey

Often found in the forests of Rwanda, the blue monkeys are one of the most exciting monkey species to spot in Rwanda and can easily be noticed by their striking blue-grey covered bodies. They often live in dense forest canopies and mainly feed on fruits, leaves, and insects.

Crowned monkey

These are medium-sized primates characterized by a dark body and a white crest on the head. They live in groups and feed mainly on fruits, insects, leaves, flowers, and seeds. While they are not considered an endangered species, this species faces a high risk of reduced numbers due to hunting.

The crowned monkeys can be spotted mainly in the dense forests of Nyungwe forest national park.

Owl faced monkey

Also known as the Hamlyn’s monkey, the owl faced monkey is a dark grey colored monkey that possess a distinctive pale vertical strip running down the nose from the forehead. These monkeys survive primarily on a plant-based diet that includes leaves, and other forest vegetation.

While these monkeys are an exciting sight and a great addition to your Rwanda primate experience, they are relatively uncommon in the wild.

Best time to visit Rwanda for a primate safari experience

A primate safari to Rwanda can be done at anytime of the year, however the best time to visit Rwanda for the primate safari experience is during the dry season that runs from June to September and December to February.

During this time of the year, the trails in the different national parks are dry thus the hikes are a bit more comfortable and, the forest foliage is less dense making primate spotting a lot easier.
