Gorilla trekking in Rushaga Sector Bwindi
Gorilla trekking is the most thrilling wildlife experience in Uganda. It involves hiking into the thick rainforest in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is found in the southwestern part of Uganda, is the best place for this activity, hosting nearly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. The park is divided into four main trekking sectors that is Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. Rushaga is the most popular and diverse gorilla trekking destination and it’s located in the southern part of the park. Rushaga is famous for having a big population of habituated gorilla families and the opportunity to engage in unique experiences like the Gorilla Habituation and trekking experience. Gorilla Families in Rushaga
Rushaga gives a unique gorilla trekking experience to visitors since it has a large number of gorilla. That are divided into eight habituated gorilla groups such as, Mishaya, Nshongi, Kahungye, Bweza, Busingye, Rwigi, Mucunguzi, and Bikingi. Each gorilla family has a unique character and behaviour as explained below
The Nshongi family was once the largest in Bwindi, known for its large number of individuals. Kahungye group is known for being highly active and often offers exciting sightings during treks. The Mucunguzi family, formed by a breakaway silverback, offers a chance to witness interesting group leadership dynamics.
Gorilla Trekking Experience in Rushaga
You will wake up very early in the morning and head to the park headquarters where you will receive briefing on how to conduct yourself around the gorillas. When briefing is done, you will be divided into groups of eight people where each group will have a guide and armed ranger to start your trek. The trek can last from 2 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. As you navigate the rugged landscape, you’ll be treated to incredible views of the forest, volcanoes, and encounters with other wildlife like monkeys and forest birds. Once you find the mountain gorillas, you will be allowed to spend one hour with them. During this time, you will have a chance to take photos of the gorillas eating, breastfeeding and grooming each other. After the trek you will head back to the park headquarters where you will be given a certificate.
Gorilla Habituation Experience
What makes Rushaga unique is that it also offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors spend four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group under the guidance of researchers and trackers. This gives a deeper insight into the lives of gorillas beyond the regular one-hour trekking experience. It’s a rare opportunity only available in Rushaga and Rushaga sectors and allows for a deeper, more immersive experience.
Other Activities to Do in Rushaga
Nature Walks
Rushaga offers the best and amazing nature walks that take about 4–5-hours giving visitors a chance to explore the thick impenetrable forest of Bwindi. The nature walk can be done either in the morning or evening. The walks are conducted along Kajembehajambe Trail, Kashasha River Trail, which connects Rushaga to Buhoma. During this nature walk you will see beautiful breath-taking landscapes, rivers, dense forest, butterflies, birds, primates, and indigenous flora along the way. These walks are led by knowledgeable guides who share insights into the ecology of Bwindi.
Batwa Cultural Experience
The Batwa, also referred to as the pygmies were the indigenous forest dwellers of Bwindi before it became a national park in 1991. During your visit you will be taken through the Batwa’s traditional way of life like how they hunted, gathered wild food, made fire, and treated illnesses using forest herbs. This is done through music, dance, and storytelling that reflect the Batwa’s deep connection to the forest. The Batwa Cultural Experience helps to promote cultural understanding and supports the local Batwa communities.
Bird Watching
Rushaga is often referred to as haven for bird watchers, as it’s home to over 350 bird species among which are the Albertine Rift endemics. This birding activity is carried out with the help of a knowledgeable birding guide who will ensure that you spot both rare and common bird species. During your birding adventure your spot species like the African green broadbill, Regal sunbird, Black bee-eater, Yellow-eyed black flycatcher, Bar-tailed trogon, Ruwenzori batis, grey cheeked hornbill, Brown capped weaver, handsome francolin, blue spotted wood dove, African pygmy kingfisher, ross’s turaco among others.

Best Time to Visit Rushaga
The best time to visit Rushaga for all the activities mentioned above is during the dry season that is in the months of June to August and December to February. since during this time of the year, the trails are less slippery, and visibility is better.
However, Visitors can also visit Rushaga in the wet season that is in the months of March to May and November. This time is the best for bird watchers, as this is the peak breeding season for many species. Plus, you might also enjoy discounted prices on accommodation during this time.
How to Get to Rushaga
By Road via Uganda
From Kampala or Entebbe, you can drive to Rushaga via Masaka–Mbarara–Kabale–Kisoro. The journey takes about 8-10 hours depending on the traffic and passes through scenic landscapes.
By Road via Rwanda
Visitors can also drive to Rushaga from Kigali. This drive from Kigali to Rushaga via the Cyanika or Katuna border post takes about 4–5 hours, making it the best option for those who prefer shorter road journeys.
By Air
You can book a domestic flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip, then drive for about 1–2 hours to Rushaga. Charter services are provided by Aero Link Uganda or Bar Aviation.
