The price of a gorilla trekking permit varies by country and residency status. In Uganda, a standard gorilla trekking permit is at USD 800 for Foreign non-residents, allowing one hour with a habituated gorilla family. In Rwanda, a gorilla permit costs USD 1,500 per person for one trek.

These fees contribute directly to conservation, management of the gorilla permits and community development. The price of gorilla permits are set by government authorities and can change, so it is best to confirm at the time of booking. The gorilla permit is mandatory and non – transferable.

4. What is the Difference Between Gorilla Trekking and Gorilla Habituation

Gorilla trekking allows visitors one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family with a group size of 8 people, while gorilla habituation allows four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family and the group size is limited to four.

Gorilla habituated experience offers a deeper observation and learning of the gorillas and their dynamics, it is also more physically demanding and more experience. It is also only available in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.

5. How Long Does a Gorilla Trek Take?

A gorilla trekking experience can take from 30 minutes to several hours depending on where the gorilla family is located in the day of the trek. Gorillas move freely, and their location changes daily based on their search for food and safety.

Some gorilla treks are sort and gentle, while others involve steep climbs and long hikes. Visitors should be prepared for a full morning and afternoon in the forest. Once gorillas are found, the viewing time is strictly limited. Also, the return hike can take time depending on the terrain.

Age limits are strictly enforced by park authorities. Children below the minimum age are not allowed to take part in gorilla trekking. For families traveling with younger children should plan alternative activities for them and this policy is enforced across all gorilla parks.

8. How Close Do You Get to the Gorillas?

All visitors must keep a minimum distance of about 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas at all times. The distance helps prevent diseases transmission and keeps gorillas calm. In some situations where gorillas move closer to the visitors, you must remain still and calm. Also follow the guide’s instructions.

9. How Many People Trek a Gorilla Family Each Day?

For a standard gorilla trekking, a maximum of eight visitors are allowed to visit one gorilla family per day. For a gorilla habituation experience, only four people are allowed to visit a gorilla family.

The number of people visiting a gorilla family per day is limited so as to reduce stress on the gorillas and minimize environment impact. The group sizes are strictly controlled and enforced. This system ensures a quiet and respectful experience, also it means permits are limited and sell out quickly.

 

10. What Should I Wear for Gorilla Trekking?

For a comfortable gorilla trek, visitors should wear sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, and long – sleeved shirts to protect you against mud, insect bites and thorny vegetation. Carry rain gears because weather in the forest is unpredictable. Neutral – colored clothing is recommended to perfectly blend into the environment.

Garden gloves are useful for gripping branches on steep trails. Aim for comfortable, practical clotting as it matters more than style. Proper footwear greatly improves comfort and safety.
