What is an East African visa?
The East African visa is a joint tourist visa that allows travelers entry into Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for tourism purposes only. Unlike the single-entry visa, the East African visa allows you multiple entry and exit into the three East African countries that is; Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for 90 days without having to reapply or pay any additional fees. On expiry of this visa, you are not allowed to reapply for it while in the country.
Which countries does it cover?
As already mentioned, the East African tourist visa covers;
- Rwanda
- Uganda
- Kenya
Who is eligible for the East African Visa
International tourists of any nationality/country visiting Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda for tourism purposes.
Validity and Cost of the East African Visa
The East African Visa is charged at $100.
The East African Visa can be applied for online using the immigration portals for any of the three East African countries that is; Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya however this visa can also be obtained on arrival in Rwanda upon landing at Kigali International Airport.
While applying for the East African visa, it is important to ensure that the issuing country is your point of entry. For example;
If your flight into East African lands in Kenya, that is, Nairobi or Mombasa, application for the East African visa must be via the Kenya eCitizen portal.
If your flight into East Africa lands in Rwanda, that is, Kigali, application for the East African visa must be via the Irembo portal.
If your flight into East Africa lands in Uganda, that is, Entebbe, application for the East African visa must be via the Uganda eVisa portal.
It is important to note that if you mistakenly arrive at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda having an East African visa issued from the Irembo Portal (Rwanda), you will be denied entry into Uganda or you will be asked to apply for the single-entry visa into Uganda.
While using this visa, an exit from Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda block automatically leads to the expiration of this visa therefore for re-entry into any of the countries, you will be required to obtain a new single-entry visa into the respective country for example, if you visit Uganda, Kenya and then transfer to Tanzania, your East African visa automatically becomes invalid therefore you will need a new single entry visa into the respective country of your choice.
Although these countries share a tourist visa, the application for the visas in the different countries differ.
Once payment for the East African visa has been made upon application, visa fees are non-refundable and all visa payments are subject to a bank charge which is not included in the $100.
