Dominance among the gorillas, gorilla strength
Dominancy refers to the scenario where one individual shows its strength over others as the potential leader of the family and enjoys the respect and loyalty from the rest of the family individuals.
This is a common phenomenon in multi male gorilla families’ majorly in males and sometimes also it happens amongst females. The fight for dominance is always as a result of competition for mates and food so as to gain respect from the rest of the family individuals one has to show its strength and capability over the other, in this scenario this is where males always end up engaging themselves in a fight .when the subordinate males start trying to challenge the alpha male majorly due to need to gain dominance over the alpha, in most cases it is due to competition over mates amongst themselves. In a gorilla family it is only the alpha male who is responsible for mating with the rest of the females in the family however, when the young males get sexually active majorly after becoming silverbacks they tend to compete for mates with the alpha male hence engaging themselves in to a fight so as to be able to mate with the females. In every gorilla family their must be a dominant male who is responsible of coordinating the families daily activities inclusive of the family movements , feeding , resting , nesting and the entire family protection and safety.
For the alpha male to maintain the dominance of its family when he grabs or when females with unweaned off infants joins the family majorly the male infants, the silverback kills these male infants because of fear to be challenged by these infants when they grow old. However, killing of the infants amongst gorillas depends on the tolerance of the silverback sometimes some silverbacks can tolerate to stay in the same family with the infants which are not their offsprings though killing the infants is one way of avoiding to be challenged over the control of the family.
When the young males in the family grow the alpha male in most cases will keep avoiding and punishing these young males as a way of scaring them away from the family due to fear to be challenged . In most cases some young males will try to endure the harsh treatment of the alpha male as they will keep coming from behind or a side of the family and if the harassment worsens these young males may opt to live a solitary life hence leaving the alpha male dominating the family.
Amongst females, the alpha females of the family always prefer to get close to the alpha male and they will keep scaring the subordinate females. While feeding the alpha female can even chase away the subordinate in case they are feeding on what they are interested in, this is where they always tend to pick up some fights which are always stopped or ended by the alpha male of the family because alpha male has to rush to the place where the fight is and try to end the issue.
