This 3-days Rwanda silverback gorilla tour will take you from the hustling and bustling city of Kigali across the beautiful sceneries of this land of a thousand hills to Volcanoes national park, a gem carefully nested in far northwest of Rwanda where you will encounter the gentle yet endangered mountain gorillas and the golden monkeys, a primate endemic to the Virunga conservation area.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pick up from Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes national park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met and greeted by your designated company driver guide who will welcome you to Rwanda, give you a short briefing of this 3-days silverback gorilla safari to ensure that you are both on the same page then assist you to your safari vehicle. You will then set off on a scenic drive to Volcanoes national park and on arrival, check in at your gorilla lodge for an evening of relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking and Iby’iwacu cultural experience

In the morning, wake up to an early breakfast at the lodge and the 6:30am, well prepared in your hiking gears, your driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to the park headquarter ahead of the gorilla trekking adventure. Upon arrival at the park headquarters, you will assemble for a briefing on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. During the briefing, you will be advised on the code of conduct of gorilla trekking, gorilla behavior and the proper dress code for the gorilla trekking adventure. After the briefing, you will be grouped into 8 and each group assigned a gorilla family to visit. Your driver guide will then transfer you to the trailhead where you will join other members of your group and proceed on the hike in search of the mountain gorillas. This will take you between 3 to 5 hours and you will be allowed 1-hour with the mountain gorillas upon locating them. After the trek, you will meet your driver guide and return to the lodge for lunch.

Budget Gorilla trekkingAfter lunch, head out for a visit to the Iby’iwacu cultural village, also known as the gorilla guardian village where you will learn about the culture and tradition of the people of Rwanda through the music, dances, dress code, storytelling, among others. Later return to the lodge for an evening of relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Golden monkey trekking and transfer to Kigali

Just like the day before, wake up to a breakfast at the lodge then your driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to the park headquarters for a briefing on the dos and don’ts of golden monkey trekking. After the briefing, you will begin the hike in search of the golden monkeys taking you via the potato gardens of the local communities. Unlike the gorilla trek, the golden monkey trek is less strenuous and will take you between 2 to 4 hours. Once you find the golden monkeys, you will be allowed 1-hour in their presence observing them then you will meet your driver guide and drive back to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, check out of the lodge and start yet another scenic drive back to Kigali where you will be dropped off either at your hotel or Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
